I have Let’s face it — David Stern spoiled us.
When a crisis hit the Association under Stern’s reign, Mount David erupted when Stern decided it was time to go volcanic.
Silver?
Let’s put it this way: He couldn’t have done a better job Saturday night of showing everyone exactly how much he is not a carbon copy of David Stern. But then again, who is?
My big beef with Adam was the vanilla flavor of his comments. I wanted him to step to the podium, stay away from the pleasantries, look into the camera and be presidential.
“I AM OUTRAGED,” would have been a good start.
“I AM GOING TO FIX THIS,” would have been a good place to go, too.
But Silver came off as a staff lawyer, a guy more preoccupied with Sterling’s right to due process than the public’s right to be appalled. To me, and to others, he came off as scared of Sterling. It was so bad that when he alluded to the statements allegedly made by Sterling, he did not personally address them but rather said “the audio is truly offensive and disturbing.”
The audio? C’mon, Adam. You can do better than that.
Silver did not tell us how those statements made him feel. He did not personalize the issue. He acted like a lawyer, not a leader.
Stern would have done things differently. Stern knew the power of his pulpit. Stern would have shown up on time, and his vitriol would have been fantastic. And welcome, for once.
But Stern has left the building, and Silver has taken over the nicest executive office in Olympic Tower. This was a moment for him to show himself worthy of the position he holds. For him to show disgust. For him to vent his spleen. Like David would have done.
Silver gets a do-over on Tuesday afternoon when he holds a news conference in New York. It’ll be the type of news conference that isn’t just carried by ESPN, but by the mainstream news networks, too.
A few words of advice: Adam, a little righteous indignation is OK. Okay? The entire sporting world, not to mention your owners, players, coaches and fans, will be watching. You owe it to them to be angry … and to show that anger.
If you think you were judged harshly Saturday night, you have no idea what awaits you if you screw this up.
It is time to bring down the hammer. Hard. And since we can all guess what the immediate punishment will be — an indefinite suspension — it is paramount that Silver speak forcefully and passionately about a scandal that is front page news all around the globe.
“THERE IS NO PLACE FOR RACISM IN THE NBA.”
“THERE IS NO PLACE FOR RACISM IN AMERICA, OR IN THE WORLD AT LARGE.”
“RACISM WILL NOT BE TOLERATED. PERIOD.”
Summon your inner Stern, Adam.
You have a tough act to follow, but it is time for you to start acting the part.
