The NBA made the controversial decision recently to ban Los Angeles Clippers CEO Donald Sterling after a string of allegations made against him concerning racist remarks which were later published in TMZ.
The search has now begun for a new CEO to take Sterling’s place, with team president Andy Roeser moved out of his role on Tuesday. Many high profile figures in the public eye are rumored to be interested in the role, including television journalist Oprah Winfrey, boxer Floyd Mayweather Junior and ex NBA player Magic Johnson.
“Move quickly”
With this year’s NBA season well underway, the changes in ownership couldn’t have happened at a worse time for the Clippers, who will soon be facing one of their biggest rivals on 11th May, Oklahoma City Thunder. League spokesman Mike Bass was cautious of the team’s morale following the allegations, saying: “The best way to ensure the stability of the team during this difficult situation is to move quickly and install a CEO to oversee the Clippers organization. The process of identifying that individual is underway.”
While Bass can all but assure that things will be returning to normal soon, it could be too late for the Clippers, who are taking on some of the world’s best basketball players at the Los Angeles Staple Center on Sunday. Russell Westbrook, for one, is on top of his game, having recently recorded a triple double with 27 points, 10 rebounds and 16 assists against the Memphis Grizzlies, securing an almost contemptuous victory for the team.
Meanwhile, Kevin Durant is also showing no signs of stopping, having recently collected the coveted MVP trophy, following his equally impressive performance against the Grizzlies, scoring a team high 33 points in the eventual 120-109 defeat.
Despite sports oddsmakers and news outlets going crazy for the recent Sterling allegations however, the Clippers still do have a chance to take the victory against Thunder, largely thanks to their two secret weapons, Chris Paul and Blake Griffin.
Shaking off a recent injury, Chris Paul said he was looking forward to starting against the Golden State Warriors last week, declaring: “I’m all good.” His injury clearly had no effect on him, as the team secured a comfortable 126-121 victory.
This should surely stand Paul in good stead for the battle with Thunder on Sunday, and he can count on the support of Blake Griffin, who scored a mind blowing circus shot last week against the Warriors.
While the Clippers will no doubt be feeling the effects of the recent allegations, their performance of late has shown no signs of slowing, which should make for a close but nailbiting game against Thunder on Sunday.
