After a sensational season in the Chinese Basketball Association, former Cal-State Fullerton guard Bobby Brown has agreed to a three-year extension with the DongGuan Leopards.
One of the most sensational scorers outside the NBA, Brown was the second-leading scorer in China at 30.7 PPG, fresh off of leading the Euroleague in the prior season with Montepaschi Siena. Over the past two seasons, Brown has had some ridiculous scoring nights, going off for 74 points in a two-point win over Sichuan (whose import Mike Efevberha also had 50 points), 56 against the Jilin Tigers and tying the Euroleague record 41 points last season against Fenerbahce Ulker.
After going undrafted in 2007, Brown spent his rookie year in Germany with Alba Berlin, before a cup of coffee in the NBA between 2008 and 2010 with the Sacramento, Minnesota, New Orleans and the L.A. Clippers. Despite showing huge potential in the NBA Summer League, Brown never managed to fully break into a team’s rotation, and slipped through the cracks and headed to Europe.

In his three years in Europe since being exiled from the NBA, Brown rose to the top of the food chain and landed a big time contract in China. When the Chinese season finished in March, teams had a chance to take a look at Brown for the last two months of the season, but he ultimately was not picked up, despite reported interest by the Clippers.
Despite the general consensus that he is one of the top handful of American basketball players overseas right now, the allure of big-time money and stardom is far too enticing in China for Brown to consider the NBA, where his market likely currently consists of partial guaranteed contracts. For a man turning 30 in September, you can’t blame Brown for sidelining his NBA dreams in favor of ensuring his family is well set for the future.
