It wasn’t easy, but the Indiana Pacers found a way to stay alive against the Miami Heat in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference Finals on Wednesday with a 93-90 win at home.
A lot happened in the final moments of the game, where the game could have gone either way. An inordinate amount of clutch shots were converted by various players, including Chris Bosh, Rashard Lewis, LeBron James and most notably, Paul George.
The teams traded one clutch 3-pointer after another in the final two minutes of the game. Here is how it went down: Lewis hit a 3-pointer with 2:06 left, George hit one with 1:45 left, Bosh hit one with 1:16 left, George hit one with 46.7 seconds left, and Lewis hit the final 3-pointer of the game with 16 seconds left on the clock.
George was simply incredible down the stretch, and carried the Pacers on his back with 37 points, six rebounds and six steals.
From there, it was a matter of hitting free throws for the Pacers as they led 91-90. Battier tried to draw a charge on George, but a foul was called against him with the ball still out of bounds, giving George a free throw in the process. Fortunately for the Heat, he missed the free throw, and David West managed to convert just one out of two free throws after being intentionally fouled. With 13.6 seconds left and down two, Miami had plenty of options on offense. Naturally, the ball was in the hands of James.
With the clock winding down, James drove to the basket against George. Roy Hibbert left his man for the help, and then came the decision that James so often has had to make with the game on the line: pass or shoot?
James made the right basketball play and passed off to a wide-open Bosh from the corner for the potential game-winning 3-pointer. Bosh, however, missed badly as he shot wide left.
Game over.
Naturally, twitter went off. Should he have made that pass? Shouldn’t he, as the superstar of the team and the league, take that final shot?
Two championships later, these questions still chase him somehow.
Here are what some of the players around the league had to say about the matter, along with reactions on George’s ridiculous shooting display.
We’ve been waiting on a star performance from Paul George & we got one with 37pts & dominating the 4th qtr with 21pts in the Pacers win!

“@_StevieK: @DWilkins21 Michael Jordan would of never chose “the right basketball play”” Ask Paxson, Kerr and Armstrong if he did. — Dominique Wilkins (@DWilkins21) May 29, 2014
Should have LBJ taken that last shot? #MIAvsIND #NBAPlayoffs

You go for the win 3-1 on the road. If Bron shoots & misses on the dbl team, Twitter would have exploded against him. No winning on here smh — Dominique Wilkins (@DWilkins21) May 29, 2014
Can’t wait to see how Bron bounces back
