The San Antonio Spurs have made their way into the NBA finals thanks to a sensational victory over the Oklahoma City Thunder.
The game, held on Saturday, May 31st, saw the Spurs winning 112-107 in overtime, setting up a rematch for the Spurs and Miami Heat in the finals.
One person who could not have seen this coming, apart from shocked bettors, was Kevin Durant. While there is some solace for the gamblers who can have their bet online reviewed in detail, nothing can overcome the pain that the Thunder favorites must be feeling right now, particularly as they gave it their all during the game.
The game ended with 31 points and 14 rebounds for Durant, but it was not enough to overcome the power of the Spurs.
“It’s just tough losing like this, man. There’s not much more I can say,” he said in an interview after the game.
“Around here our goal is to win the big thing and go out on top, but, unfortunately, it didn’t happen for us this year, but we still improved – something we can always learn from.”
Up until their sensational defeat, the Thunder had played exceptionally well throughout the season, particularly Durant, who gained the coveted MVP award. He accepted the accolade at the beginning of May with 119 first place votes.
The Spurs played particularly well considering they lost point guard Tony Parker for the entire second half of the game thanks to left ankle soreness. Now, the team are looking forward to playing another series against Miami Heat, which is a highly anticipated pairing thanks to their previous rivalry.
The Spurs and Heat split two meetings this season. San Antonio’s Tim Duncan said: “We’re back here. We’re excited about it. We’ve got four more to win – we’ll do it this time.”
The Spurs have made it all the way through to the finals on five previous occasions, winning four out of five titles with victories in 1999, 2003, 2005 and 2007.
Last season’s collision between the two teams was particularly dramatic. After holding a 3-2 series lead and a five point lead with 28 seconds left in Game 6 at Miami, the home team soon turned their luck around with a 95-88 victory.
The Heat will certainly be on for this year’s series, as both teams boast exceptional ability in the form of previous MVP winners Tim Duncan and LeBron James. The first game starts on Thursday, and it should be a nail-biting rematch.
