After I cringed at the use of about two too many heat synonyms (well, I was on a tight deadline) at the beginning of my game story, I was struck by the calm tone of the article – as opposed to the hysteria that resulted from LeBron James missing most of the fourth quarter of Game 1 of the current series.
The heat was obviously the primary issue, but the big difference was that the only person it knocked out of the game was referee Hugh Evans, who was dehydrated and could not work the second half.
Lakers coach Pat Riley couldn’t help himself after the game when he noted with a smile: “No one needed medical attention except the referee. We’ve got to get him in better shape.”
I did note in the article that Boston coach K.C. Jones said Larry Bird nearly fainted at one point, but Bird had 34 points and 17 rebounds, so the negative effects of heat were minimal. Jones also said Robert Parish had cramps during the game, although they were not severe enough to limit his playing time.
Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, then 37, had a difficult night and seemed to be the player most affected by the conditions. Abdul-Jabbar went only 4-of-16 from the field in the first half, finished 7-of-25 overall and never was a factor, even though he had 19 points.
The other major difference between that game and the current Game 1 was that everyone knew before the game that it was going to be sauna bath muggy in Boston Garden, which was 56 years old at the time, because it had no air conditioning. We all expected it. In Game 1 at San Antonio, there was a failure that caused the heat and no one expected it.

The Lakers did not even get a chance to shoot the winning shot and went on to lose the game.
2. In Game 4, Magic nearly did the same thing again, only this time he finally got a pass off only to have Parish intercept it. Again, the Lakers lost.
3. In Game 4, Kevin McHale had his celebrated takedown of Kurt Rambis as Rambis went to the basket for a layup, and that cleared both benches.
4. The travel was brutal. After the game on Friday night, everyone flew to Los Angeles on Saturday. Game 6 was Sunday, everyone flew to Boston on Monday and Game 7 was Tuesday. It was that series that led to the 2-3-2 format that was used until this season.
At the time, reporters wrote their stories on the plane and there was no player availability. With all that had happened, the focus was on the rest of the series. In my off-day story between Games 5 and 6, in fact, I did not mention the heat of Game 5 until the 16th paragraph. It simply was another part of the series.
It was obviously also in the days before social media and the 24-hour news cycle and ESPN, only a few years old, did not even have a reporter assigned full-time to cover the NBA. So there was really no controversy about that game.
Ultimately, the heat of Game 5 was merely part of what became one of the all-time great series – a true classic.
The heat of the current Game 1 is the only story thus far in this series. But what will happen next. What if there are six more games. Can James come back in such a way to turn this into a classic? If Miami wins, cramps may not be forgotten, but they will be diminished.
