Philadelphia is known for its rich and vibrant culture and historical importance in the formation of the United States during the nation’s primitive years. Alongside its national recognizance as the meeting place for the Founding Fathers and for the cheesesteak, Philadelphia is also home to the Phillies and Eagles, two sporting franchises that date back to the 1880’s and 1930’s respectively. The Phillies have entered two World Series since 2008, winning their second championship in franchise history that year, though the team has struggled in recent years. The Eagles, despite owning zero Super Bowl championships, are on the up-and-up under innovative head coach Chip Kelly and quarterback Nick Foles. Despite late-2000’s success, a losing season seems inevitable for the Phillies this year which in-turn has allowed secondary ticket price to fall. Coming off a 10-6 season, the Eagles have experienced quite the opposite as ticket price continues to rise for the 2014 season on the secondary market.
The Phillies currently sit in the basement of the NL East at 40-51 and 10 games behind the first place Washington Nationals. Playoff hopes are minimal despite playing in an underperforming division and the Phillies schedule has been rough in the division with the Phillies having just a 16-22 record against other NL East teams. As the team continues to drop in the standings, attendance has also followed suit. The MLB average on the secondary market is $80.18 but the Phillies fall below this number as the average price for Phillies tickets is $75.94, 5.3% below MLB average.
While their baseball team has struggled, Philadelphia has a number of reasons to be excited for the upcoming football season. The Eagles had an impressive record in 2013 following an abysmal 2012 that saw the team go just 4-12. Ridding themselves of injury-prone quarterback Michael Vick, the Eagles have given the reigns to Nick Foles, who had a sensational year under center in 2013. With hopes high and secondary ticket prices even higher, the Eagles will see an average price above the NFL average of $224.28. The average price for Eagles tickets for the upcoming season is currently $253.12, 12.8% above league average. The Philadelphia Eagles schedule could once against end in the playoffs this season with an improvement in the defense and another season of high efficiency offense.
Philadelphia may not see playoff baseball this season but all signs point to a promising postseason run for the Eagles come January. As ticket prices fall at Citizens Bank Park and rise at Lincoln Financial Field, the city certainly seems to be ready for the winning mentality the Eagles possess to shine on the field, an attribute the Phillies have failed to adopt since the 2011 season.
