We’re at the point in the NBA offseason where we start asking why nobody wants the best RFAs on the market. Last year it was Brandon Jennings, and the answer was obvious: he’s Brandon Jennings. This year, it’s Greg Monroe and Eric Bledsoe, and there isn’t a clear answer to be had. In a market where Chandler Parsons gets a $15 million per year offer sheet, you’d think somebody would go after them, even if it’s just to set the price. WOLVES, WARRIORS STILL HELD UP OVER THOMPSON
But as the days have continued to pass without a deal, and as the Cleveland Cavaliers have continued to ask themselves similar questions about Love and what price they’re willing to pay to land him, this much has become clear: The Warriors still care about defense — a lot.
The Mark Jackson firing and Steve Kerr hiring in mid-May were undeniably driven in part by the desire to improve offensively, as owner Joe Lacob and so many others within the organization grew tired of seeing their wondrous scoring talents so often struggle in the former coach’s system. But the post-Kerr question about Golden State’s third-ranked defense and what lied ahead on that end of the floor has been quietly answered during these seemingly-endless discussions about Love.
In short, they’re not willing to ditch the defense.
Their recent refusal to include guard and Timberwolves target Klay Thompson in the deal is rooted in this reality, as losing Thompson would not only leave Curry overexposed defensively in the backcourt but is compounded by the fact that Love — much like incumbent power forward David Lee, who would head to Minnesota if this deal got done — isn’t exactly known as a two-way player. From Lacob on down, this is a major part of the Warriors’ internal analysis and something that belies all the initial speculation about how this Kerr era might be defined.
GASOL: FRIENDSHIP WITH KOBE IS MORE THAN BASKETBALL
“It was difficult,” Gasol told reporters when asked about informing Bryant of his decision to sign with the Bulls. “We have a close friendship. We’ve been through a lot together, and I’m sure I will miss him. But we talked to each other and our relationship goes beyond basketball and we’ll always have a friendship.
“It was difficult to talk to him, but he was very supportive and he understood. He just said I had to do what was best for me and what felt right for me and he was going to support me no matter what. That’s what friends and brothers do, and that’s what we are.”
Gasol signed a three-year, $22 million with Chicago after turning down multiple offers from the Lakers, including a two-year, $23 million deal and a three-year, $29 million extension.
KINGS STILL WANT JOSH SMITH
Vince Ellis of the Detroit Free Press:
The Sacramento Kings made another run at Detroit Pistons forward Josh Smith during this week’s league meetings in Las Vegas, but they were rebuffed again.
A person with firsthand knowledge of the situation confirmed ESPN’s Marc Stein’s report that the Kings were interested in Smith. Another source said Thursday morning that there are “no legs” to the report — suggesting that nothing was imminent.
It reportedly was the second time the Kings had reached out about Smith. Stein reported the first contact late last month.
The Kings believed that the Pistons would get rid of Smith without seeking valuable assets in return, but the Pistons have been adamant that that’s not the case, and they are prepared to bring him back for his second season in Detroit.
The Kings talked about bringing in a third team to facilitate a trade, but nothing has materialized.
Last month, Stein reported that Smith initially was part of a deal that would have sent Kings forward Jason Thompson and either Derrick Williams or veteran Jason Terry to Detroit, but those talks broke down.

KNICKS COULD BRING BACK METTA

The Knicks have discussed whether to extend a training-camp invitation to Metta World Peace on a mostly non-guaranteed deal.
World Peace is eager to reunite with his former Lakers coach, Phil Jackson, and his former Los Angeles teammate, coach Derek Fisher, and erase the bitter memory of his original homecoming.
“[World Peace] has the utmost respect for Phil and Derek,’’ his agent, Marc Cornstein, told The Post. “There’s a history there. They know he’s out there.’’
The Knicks are trying to add another good-sized small forward to the roster. After Carmelo Anthony, only rookie Cleanthony Early is a true small forward. During summer league play, Early is trying to prove he is ready to be Anthony’s backup, but hasn’t shown he can create his own shot.
The World Peace camp has expressed interest to the Knicks. Under the buyout, the Knicks already are paying World Peace $250,000 for next season. If World Peace were invited and made the team, he’d be eligible for the veteran’s minimum, $1.4 million
