The latest version of Team USA that is preparing to defend its title at the World Cup of Basketball in Spain is much bigger than previous editions. But is it better?
Previous American squads were built around perimeter players such as Kobe Bryant, LeBron James and Kevin Durant, none of whom are here this time around. The stud of this squad appears to be Anthony Davis, who was entering his senior year of high school when the last World Cup was played in 2010.
Along with DeMarcus Cousins and Kenneth Faried, Davis gives the Americans the size they need to deal with Spain, which can field a frontcourt of the Gasol brothers and Serge Ibaka. But that doesn’t mean Team USA is unbeatable.
There are a couple of weaknesses on coach Mike Krzyzewski’s squad, and the better teams at the World Cup may be able to exploit them.
In this interview with Cinesport’s Noah Coslov, I discuss those weaknesses as well as who should really be Krzyzewski’s starting point guard.
