EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. — Knee soreness kept Derrick Rose out of practice Tuesday, making it the third straight day he has not played any basketball. And that left Team USA officials wondering whether Rose will be capable of handling the rigorous World Cup schedule. Also, DeMarcus Cousins practiced Tuesday but listed himself as 50-50 for Wednesday night’s exhibition game against the Dominican Republic, an assessment that appeared to catch Mike Krzyzewski by surprise when the comment was relayed to the coach. NBA Referee Dick Bavetta Calls It Quits
Dick Bavetta’s first game as an NBA referee was a Celtics-Knicks game at Madison Square Garden was Dec. 2, 1975. The first game I covered as a writer with Dick Bavetta as an NBA referee also was a Celtics-Knicks game, almost 14 years later. The once-mighty Celtics were fighting to make the playoffs. Larry Bird had missed most of the season with a back injury. His replacement was Kevin Gamble, a second-year player already on his second team. Early on, there was
Tweet of the Night: Joel Embiid has a bold prediction about MVP rankings in a couple of years
If there was a discussion to be had about who the top two MVP candidates would be for the next couple of years, the names to come up on most people’s lists would be quite predictable: LeBron James and Kevin Durant. Even the most casual fans will have trouble coming up with a case against that one. Ask Philadelphia 76ers rookie Joel Embiid to name his candidates, though, and you will get a response that only he could come up with. Clearly,
Tweet of the Day: Clippers Welcome Owner Steve Ballmer
Less than half a day removed from WWE SummerSlam where former UFC Heavyweight Champion Brock Lesnar pummeled John Cena to capture the WWE World Heavyweight Championship, the Staples Center hosted a joyous event for the fans in Los Angeles. The Los Angeles Clippers welcomed their new owner Steve Ballmer with a fan rally. [Read more…]
Kevin Durant cannot endorse products with sugar or preservatives
Kevin Durant is prohibited from endorsing any food or drink product that contains sugar or preservatives, under terms of an endorsement deal with Kind Foods that was negotiated by his latest agency, Jay Z’s Roc Nation, a source tells SheridanHoops.com. The rare contractual language is part of Durant’s deal with Kind Foods, which markets healthy snack foods. Durant signed an endorsement deal with them in March. For the next three years, because of the contract language, you will not see Durant
PODCAST: More on Kevin Durant, Jay Z and Team USA
Not many people are criticizing Kevin Durant for quitting Team USA nearly two weeks after the team began training camp, but I am an exception. I thought it was a poor choice by a guy who let down his national team coach and teammates — even if the majority of folks want to give him a pass. But as we look closer at Durant’s decision, it raises some questions. Is he getting bad advice from Jay Z and Roc Nation, who
Mitnick: “The Other Dream Team” of the Basketball World Cup
It seems unlikely that a country with a smaller population than Connecticut could challenge the United States on basketball’s international stage. But that is exactly what Lithuania plans on doing. Runner-up in the 2013 European Championship and Jerry Garcia’s favorite national team, Lithuania will be a medal contender in the inaugural 2014 Basketball World Cup and could pose as Team USA’s lone threat on the road to the championship game. “The Other Dream Team” will be playing without its leader Linas Kleiza,
SH Blog: Shawn Marion To Sign With Cleveland
Free agent Shawn Marion is reportedly set to sign with the Cleveland Cavaliers. Reports have been coming in for days that Marion was leaning towards Cleveland. The four time all-star has been linked to other teams that have been attempting to acquire his services, including the Indiana Pacers. As an NBA veteran it makes sense that Marion was only interested in a contender, and signing with Cleveland will be an ideal situation for someone attempting to win another championship. The 36 year old
