NEW YORK — The draft lottery is probably going to look a whole lot different by the time this week is over. Regarding the Philadelphia 76ers, it is going to ensure that their tank job for this upcoming season will not be replicated by anyone else anytime soon.
Under a proposal scheduled to be voted upon by representatives of the 30 NBA ownership groups, the formula for the draft lottery will change. As first reported by Zach Lowe of Grantland, the proposal on the table would give the teams with the four worst records equal 12 percent chances to win the lottery. Under the current formula, the worst team has a 25 percent chance of winning.
Also, the team with the worst record — that that is sure to be Philadelphia this season — will be guaranteed drafting no worse than seventh, as the first six picks would be determined by a ping-pong ball drawing. Currently, the worst team can pick no worse than fourth.
What else is going to be discussed at this week’s owners’ meeting?

why should the 6ers have to overspend on ok players and remain in mediocrity forever?

I don’t think the NBA should punish every bad team going forward, just because there is one bad apple – Sixers, at this time.
Even with what the Sixers are doing, they are unlikely to succeed and are NOT setting an example for other teams to follow.
The Sixers have the worst attendance in the NBA and even with only 25% odds of getting the #1 pick, they aren’t likely to make the playoffs for years.
Also, the Bucks under Kidd are not going to be tanking. The Warriors and Lakers have plans to be better too before permanently damaging their fan base.
More often the case is a team that is just bad, like the 2010 New Jersey Nets, who won 12 games, despite trying hard for the 2nd half of that season. They only got the #3 pick (Favors) which later turned into Deron Williams (with two 1st round picks).
Imagine if they got the #7 pick!? There would be more complaints of unfairness.
And what if the Lakers are the 2nd worst team in the NBA this season and they get the #7 pick. Kobe is not going to let his team tank. Even last year players (Lakers) said they wouldn’t tank, because most of the players were on 1 year contracts and had to impress the rest of the league. You can imagine the complaints if that happened to the Lakers next summer.
