In an attempt to quicken the pace of games and time spent on replay reviews, the NBA has opened a brand new replay center focused on just that. The replay center will help referees to make the right calls on reviewable plays, in a much more timely fashion.
With the ability to view multiple different camera angles on one screen at a time, the refs will have what they need to expedite these often lengthy periods of review. The facility is located in Secaucus, NJ.
The “state-of-the-art” center is equipped with “20 replay stations and 94 television monitors, the NBA Replay Center will be directly connected to all 29 NBA arenas, streamlining the process of instant replay video review. A groundbreaking, high-speed arena network will accelerate the replay process while also enhancing the accuracy with which calls are made”, according to the NBA Communications Group release on the facility.
They also released a video of the replay center, which can be seen here. These are a couple photos released from the NBA inside the facility on their Twitter account.
A photo above is taken from the side view looking at one section of the television monitors and replay stations. Below we see a wide shot of the facility and its setup.
The NBA Replay Center is set to serve as the primary review hub for all plays that are reviewable. Once one of the 15 reviewable calls, or “triggers”, comes into play, the oncourt officials have the power to communicate directly with the replay center to make the right call. The referee crew chief is in charge of making the final call on the play in question.
The new center also boasts the ability to zoom, split screen and even more additional angles to be used on reviewed plays to enhance and speed up the process of making correct calls. Commissioner Adam Silver seems to be stressing the need to have the correct calls being made on an everyday basis.
But the NBA wasn’t done there. They have also released a video archive of the replays that will be available to fans at NBA.com/replay. Included here is an explanation for the final call made and the rule to which it applies. You’ll also be able to search through the video database at any time for any one specific play from across the league.
The NBA Replay Center will be open and available starting the first game of the 2014-15 NBA season.
