Monday afternoon New York Knicks All-Star forward Carmelo Anthony was basking in his career accomplishment. A night earlier, in a home game against the Charlotte Hornets at Madison Square Garden he scored a very important basket — two important baskets, really.
The first basket came with 7:41 left in the first quarter, when he hit his second shot in the game, a three. That shot gave New York an early 15-to-five lead. It also gave Anthony 20,002 career points, putting him in the exclusive 20,000 club. He is just the 40th player to achieve the feat.
The other basket of great importance, with the game tied at 93 with 1:23, Anthony hit the go-ahead shot, giving the Knicks a two-point lead that would later stretch to three after a free thow, resulting in a 96-93 victory in front of the home crowd.
Anthony relished the monumental moment, taking time Monday to include the fans of MSG in his career achievement.

Teammate and Knicks point guard Jose Calderon congratulated Anthony on Twitter, as did NBA Hall of Famer and Los Angeles Lakers great Magic Johnson.
Great win last night! Congrats to @carmeloanthony on the 20000 thousands points! First win @TheGarden this season #moretocome #knickstape — jose manuel calderon (@JmCalderon3) November 3, 2014
Congrats to @carmeloanthony on becoming the 40th player in NBA history to score 20,000 career points!

Carmelo continues to show us why he’s one of the best ever w/ a great performance in the 4th in CLE & the game winner against the Hornets!

Anthony’s 28-point performance against the Hornets leaves his career total at 20,025, leaving him just 17 behind Antwan Jamison and 24 behind Tom Chambers, both of whom he’ll likely pass in his next game. Considering that he has averaged just under a season total of 2,000 points in each of the past four seasons that had 82 games (not including the lockout-shortened season), he could move up as high as 30th by season’s end, if healthy. That would move him above such greats as Larry Bird, George Gervin, Walt Bellamy and Gary Payton.
