Kind of funny to see so many teams supposedly lining up to get their hands on Josh Smith. One team’s $35 million piece of trash is apparently somebody else’s treasure, eh?
Why a good team would want to bring in a player who has a high potential to poison the well is beyond me, but Smith will clear waivers on Christmas Eve and presumably will make up his mind on where his post-Pistons career will take him. Speculation in the mainstream media has focused on Houston and Dallas, the former because of a need to boost the power forward position manned by Terrence Jones when he is not hurt, the latter because of Smith’s years-old relationship with new Mavericks point guard Rajon Rondo.
Only time will tell where J-Smoove ends up, but if ever the term caveat emptor applied, this would be Exhibit A. Smith is going to get paid his full $13.9 million salary this season and each of the next two by the Pistons, so anything he gets in a new contract would merely be gravy. To me, that is not a formula for motivation.
We could have the Smith question answered by Christmas day, which brings us the annual NBA quintuple-header.
What should fans look forward to? Or what alternate plans should be made? My answers in this video with CineSport’s Noah Coslov.
