It’s a light, split schedule in MLB on getaway day — seven afternoon games begin at 1:08 ET, with Early and All-Day contests offered at DraftKings. Turbo pools (3:10) span the three late-afternoon starts.
With only three games in the evening (7:05) Dallas Keuchel $9000 is a tough call; those last two starts are discouraging but who can forget that May 30 complete game, 11-K shutout? A.J. Burnett $9700 is a strong play at home against the Reds. At 34, Dan Haren $7700 has lost a few mph from his fastball over the years but succeeds with location and off-speed pitches.
Adam Warren $5900 is coming off his best start of the season, and Lance Lynn $9200 returns from a forearm injury so a pitch count is possible. While runs will be hard to come by tonight, the Pirates might get to Anthony DeSclafani $7000. We are going to focus on the Early opportunities and just dabble elsewhere.
DK matches your first deposit 100% (up to $600) with bonus funds that convert to cash. You also get a FREE entry into the $65K Moonshot, with 5,150 guaranteed cash prizes — $5,000 for first — and a maximum of 24,916 teams.
Although Jacob DeGrom $10100 and Sonny Gray $9500 are expensive, both are remarkably consistent. For a change, I’m not trying to shop for pitching bargains. Eduardo Rodriguez $7600 has been very good in four of his five big-league starts and we’ve had success using Carlos Rodon $5900 but both rookie southpaws are risk-reward choices. Spending almost 40% of the salary cap on SP means we’re forced to compromise a little with hitters.
Steven Vogt $4300 and Buster Posey $3900 are the “best” catchers. However, Miguel Montero $3200 is more affordable and all the Cubs’ LH batters are worth considering vs. Carlos Frias $4300. When Posey plays 1B, backup C Andrew Susac $2600 is tempting.
The great Paul Goldschmidt $6300 homered again last night and is worth the money if you are going with one cheap pitcher. Second choice at 1B is Anthony Rizzo $5300 but don’t forget Posey and Vogt are eligible at two positions.
I was a bit disappointed in D.J. LeMahieu $4000 last night but will give him another chance. 2B/3B Anthony Rendon $4200 is back in top form and Howie Kendrick $3400 generally fares well vs. lefties.
There are four high-priced 3B and it’s not easy to decide. Salaries for Manny Machado $5500 and Nolan Arenado $5700 are finally in line with their talent. A less-expensive option is Pablo Sandoval $3800, who has a 1.067 OPS over his last ten.
Yes, Troy Tulowitzki $5500 is worth the money. Xander Bogaerts $4100 is another SS candidate, but we’re going ultra-cheap with Andrew Romine $2400, who has started four straight for the Tigers and rapped out six hits including three doubles and a pair of homers.
Bryce Harper $5800 is on both my wish list and the “can’t afford” list. Charlie Blackmon $4800 is the best OF I can squeeze in under the circumstances. I still like A.J. Pollock $4800 at Coors but am forced to settle for less. Chris Coghlan $3500 and Will Venable $3400 have good matchups; we liked Gregor Blanco $2800 yesterday (2 H, 1 R, 1 RBI, 1 BB) and he’s batting leadoff.
