Rain washed out three ballgames yesterday and another was suspended. The Reds and Mets will resume in the seventh inning tied 1-1 and finish that one before starting today’s game. We also have two doubleheaders to consider: the Nationals in Philadelphia and the Indians in Baltimore. Only the openers of those twin bills matter in DFS.
DraftKings has Late action (4:05 Eastern) on four games and Turbo offerings at 2:10 on just two games, but we’ll stick with the largest pools that close at 1:05.
Take your pick of aces. David Price $11000 annihilated the White Sox on June 6 in Chicago, Felix Hernandez $10800 has dominated the Angels twice already this season, Zack Greinke $10300 should handle the Marlins without their only slugger, and Chris Archer $10000 can beat the banged-up Red Sox, especially in the Juice Box.
DK matches your first deposit 100% (up to $600) with bonus funds that convert to cash. You also get a FREE entry into the $70K Moonshot, with 5,400 guaranteed cash prizes — $54,000 for first — and a maximum of 26,820 teams.
Madison Bumgarner $10600 has pitched very well in June (2.87 ERA, 41 K/5 BB in 31.1 IP) with a 1-2 record to show for it. The Giants have lost his last three starts 3-2, 2-0 and 1-0, so they owe MadBum some run support.
Unfortunately, there are no standouts among less-expensive SP. Lefty Steven Matz $7700 makes his MLB debut after putting up superb numbers in the Pacific Coast League, which favors hitters. Michael Pineda $7500 can shut down the Astros on his best day, but got rocked in two of his last three.
Using two stud pitchers means scouring the hitters for bargains at nearly every position. C Brian McCann $3900 had a homer and 4 RBI on Saturday but Francisco Cervelli $3000 is better value.
At 1B, there are plenty of more expensive options but we’re targeting Lucas Duda $3600 to break out at home against hittable righty Josh Smith $4200. 1B/OF Brandon Moss $4200 went deep yesterday and little-known 1B/OF Xavier Scruggs $2900 is doing a fine job for the Cardinals when he starts.
Jason Kipnis $5100 and Brian Dozier $4800 are worth the money at 2B, Jose Altuve $4300 seems to be over his hamstring woes and 2B/3B Matt Duffy $3600 continues to surprise.
I liked Evan Longoria $3900 yesterday and he paid off. There are some great 3B available at higher salaries — Manny Machado $4800 and Josh Donaldson $4700 for example — but we have to compromise after spending on arms.
20-year-old rookie Carlos Correa $4500, after just 19 games in the Show, is the best SS in the AL. Pineda is a tough matchup, but the kid’s bat is extremely quick. J.J. Hardy $3400 is my value pick at a thin position.
What’s got into Curtis Granderson $4200? Three HR in his last four games, yesterday’s to the opposite field, suggest he’s seeing the ball extremely well. Brett Gardner $5200 is also scalding-hot — .465/.495/.895 over 10 games — if you can afford him. Mike Trout $4400 has always hit King Felix well, Matt Kemp $4300 has come to life and as usual, there are playable OF in every salary bracket. Marlon Byrd $3500 might take advantage if Matz falters, Chris Parmelee $2900 has been playing every day for the Orioles and Angel Pagan $3300 is a catalyst for the Giants.
