With Draymond Green taking over the starting power forward position, emerging as one of the best defenders in the league and signing a five-year deal with the Golden State Warriors this summer, it was no secret that time had run out for former starter David Lee.
It was a simple matter of when, and Lee, who had been with the team for the last five years through the good times and the bad, was finally traded on Tuesday to the Boston Celtics for Gerald Wallace and another player to be named.
Despite losing his starting role due to an injury early in the season, and despite eventually losing his spot in Steve Kerr’s rotation, Lee stayed upbeat and stayed ready throughout the playoffs in case his services would be needed. It was, in fact, needed – particularly against the Memphis Grizzlies and the Cleveland Cavaliers in the NBA Finals. Despite getting limited minutes, Lee did all he could to help change the complexion of both series (and he did) when the Warriors were down 2-1 and undoubtedly played a part in helping the team win its first championship in 40 years.
While Lee said his goodbyes on instagram, his teammates openly showed affection towards him on twitter, reminding him that no matter what happens from here on out, he will always be a champion:
Sad to see my bro DLee go but couldn’t have asked for a better vet! Wishing you the best on your new journey.
