Once upon a time in the NBA, Gilbert Arenas was one of the most dominant players the league had to offer with plenty of personality to boot.
With his explosive athleticism, handles and ability to shoot from just about anywhere, it was almost too easy for Arenas to score. He was also the pioneer of NBA blogging and captured the attention of many fans for sharing a player’s perspective on the game of basketball when things like twitter and instagram had yet to exist.
He also had a way of embracing the biggest moments and had some serious clutch genes, as you’ll find below:
Arenas was probably well on his way to a Hall of Fame career, but then came the knee issues and troubles off the court that essentially ended his basketball life in the NBA way too short. It’s easy to forget just how special Arenas was, but Nik Stauskas was there on Monday to remind us about the man we once called Agent Zero:
People sleep on how nice Gilbert Arenas was. Just watched some old highlights and dude was straight up unstoppable! ???? #AgentZero #Hibachi

Indeed, Arenas was absolutely unstoppable on many nights during his dominant years (from 2004 to 2007), and that’s easy to see when you look at his 2005-2006 season in particular, when he averaged 29.3 points on 44.7 percent shooting from the field (82 percent from the stripe on 10 free throw attempts per game) to go with 3.5 rebounds, 6.1 assists and two steals. Here are some particularly memorable games prior to his knee issues:
Arenas may be done with the NBA, but he’s still around and very opinionated about what’s going on in the league these days. He doesn’t use twitter, but has plenty to say on his entertaining instagram account. Nick Young, who grew under the tutelage of Arenas in his early days with the Washington Wizards, also had this to share about his former mentor:
