It’s the Larry Sanders Show. Not the old HBO sitcom starring Garry Shandling, which I never really found to be that funny but ultimately paved the way for similar real-life parody vehicles such as Curb Your Enthusiasm and Entourage. No, this is neither parody nor sitcom. It’s more of a reality show, and its star appears as serious as a heart attack about becoming a permanent resident of our Most Improved Player Rankings. Bernucca: Influenced by national TV money, Stern shows he is just a casual fan
David Stern is disingenuous. How’s that for one of those million-dollar words that the NBA commissioner loves to use when talking to the hoi polloi about basketball? In slapping the San Antonio Spurs with a $250,000 fine for resting their trio of stars in a nationally televised game, Stern said in his customary, quite lawyerly fashion, “The result here is dictated by the totality of the facts in this case.” [Read more…]
Raptors sign Mickael Pietrus
In an effort to close their gaping hole at small forward, the slumping Toronto Raptors on Friday signed veteran Mickael Pietrus. No terms were disclosed. Pietrus spent last season with the Boston Celtics but was not re-signed. During the offseason, he was looking for either a multi-year deal or a one-year contract at more than the veteran’s minimum. The France native also contemplated playing in Europe. [Read more…]

That answer was provided by reader Brian Rivel, who determined the list was made up of the five players who finished second in the major statistical categories – scoring, rebounding, assists, blocks and steals – a season ago. [Read more…]
LeBron James reclaims top spot in jersey sales
Has LeBron James rid himself of his image as a villain? Jersey sales would certainly suggest that. The NBA released the top 15 selling jerseys from April through Cyber Monday, and James has reclaimed the top spot. James last had the top-selling jersey in April 2011, less than a year after he joined the Miami Heat via “The Decision” and before his poor performance in the NBA Finals against the Dallas Mavericks. [Read more…]
Most Improved Player Rankings: Week Two
I’m filling in for our peerless, fearless editor-in-chief for this week’s edition – – which means these will be our Most Improved Rankings in more ways than one. This is perhaps the most difficult award for media members, because every season there are dozens of candidates and almost as many parameters for what constitutes improved. A case in point came last season, when the media clearly voted for the wrong guy. [Read more…]
Kings’ Aaron Brooks fined $25,000 by NBA
The Sacramento Kings are making quite a contribution to the NBA’s fine coffers this season. Kings guard Aaron Brooks was fined $25,000 by the league on Monday for throwing his mouthpiece into the stands after Friday’s loss at Utah. [Read more…]
