Phoenix Suns forward Grant Hill on Wednesday was named one of the recipients of the Hall of Fame’s Human Spirit Award. The award also is known as “The Mannie Jackson” and is named after the former corporate executive and current owner of the Harlem Globetrotters, a member of the Hall of Fame himself. The award was first given in 2007. Hill was honored from the pro game. The winner for the amateur ranks was Connecticut coach Jim Calhoun and the winner for
On Lookahead Tuesday, LeBron comes up big in fourth quarter
The following sentence you are about to read is true. In Tuesday night’s home win over Philadelphia, LeBron James scored 14 straight Miami points in the fourth quarter. Look, a lot has been made of James’ disappearing acts in the guts of the game. Some of it is hater bait, but some of it is warranted. And most of what has been warranted dates to when he arrived in Miami at the beginning of last season. For the most part, James wasn’t like
Reggie Miller gets the call from the Hall
Sharpshooter Reggie Miller, disrespectfully snubbed a year ago, heads the 2012 Hall of Fame Class. This year’s class was announced Monday in New Orleans, hours before the NCAA title game between Kentucky and Kansas. Other prominent new members are Don Nelson, Jamaal Wilkes and Ralph Sampson, all with ties to the Golden State Warriors. Miller played his entire 18-year career with the Indiana Pacers, scoring 25,279 points. He somehow was overlooked last year, when the inductees included Chris Mullin – and Dennis
Irving, Thomas again named NBA Rookies of the Month
Kyrie Irving of the Cleveland Cavaliers and Isaiah Thomas of the Sacramento Kings maintained the point guard stranglehold on the NBA Rookie of the Month award. Irving won for the Eastern Conference for the fourth straight month and Thomas earned his second straight Western Conference honor, the league announced Monday. There have been eight monthly rookie awards this season, and point guards have won them all. Irving has swept the East honors and Ricky Rubio of the Minnesota Timberwolves won the first
Bernucca: It’s way past time to show Love some love
This week, there was a groundswell for Kevin Love’s inclusion in the MVP conversation. Thanks for joining us in 2012, folks. Love should should have been in it months ago. We know all the names that already comprised the conversation – LeBron James, Kevin Durant, Kobe Bryant, Chris Paul – with Tony Parker and Dwight Howard on the periphery. Those six candidates differ from Love in two ways. 1. They all play on winning teams. 2. This season, they all couldn’t wash Love’s socks. Yes,
Sizzling Celts surpass sliding Sixers atop Atlantic Division
When both the Boston Celtics and New York Knicks got off to sputtering starts to their seasons, the Philadelphia 76ers gladly assumed the void at the top of the Atlantic Division, which simultaneously is the worst and most valuable division in the NBA. Despite opening with a five-game road trip, the 76ers grabbed first place before arriving home and held onto it like it was a winning lottery ticket. Since Dec. 28, Philadelphia has not been out of the top spot
Suns’ Grant Hill has knee surgery
The playoff hopes of the Phoenix Suns took a hit Friday when forward Grant Hill underwent surgery on his right knee. He is expected to return before the end of the regular season, the team said. According to the team, Hill was under the knife less than 30 minutes for a procedure performed by Suns orthopedic surgeon Dr. Thomas Carter, who repaired a medial meniscus tear. Hill had an MRI on Thursday that revealed the tear. He sat out games Tuesday and
Clippers’ Evans fined $25,000 for obscene gesture
This has been a good week for obscene gestures, and the NBA’s coffers. On Wednesday, Orlando Magic forward Glen Davis was fined $35,000 by the NBA for flipping the bird toward heckling fans in Toronto. On Friday, it was Reggie Evans’ turn. Evans, the forward of the Los Angeles Clippers, was hit with a $25,000 fine for a middle-finger salute in a home win over New Orleans on Monday. Both Davis and Evans tried to make their vulgarity appear to be something else. Davis
