// Right about the time “Glee” was airing on Fox, Heat haters up and down the Eastern time zone were experiencing some unbridled glee of their own. The Heat were riding a three-game losing streak, Dwyane Wade was “celebrating” his 30th birthday by wearing a suit and nursing a sprained ankle, and Miami was being manhandled at home by San Antonio, digging itself a 17-point first-half hole. “Glee” ended on Fox at 9 p.m., right around the time the glee ended for
Tonight’s best game: Utah at Denver
After consecutive 11-game nights and before another 11-game slate on the league’s unofficial holiday of Martin Luther King Day, the NBA adopts its customary strategy on Sundays in January of refusing to schedule heavily against the NFL. That leaves a just three-game board, with the Utah Jazz visiting the Denver Nuggets likely the best game. Hey, it can’t be Lakers-Clippers every night. And that Broncos-Patriots game was a real thriller, huh? This is Utah’s second visit to the Mile High City. Their
Clippers beat Lakers, finally give LA fans a rivalry
csprtContainer(); By sheer numbers, Saturday night has the fewest TV viewers. Kids do sleepovers, singles do bars and clubs, couples do date night. That’s too bad, because that means a whole bunch of people missed an awesome basketball game. The Clippers and Lakers finally battled for something other than column inches Saturday. And when it was over, Los Angeles had what it has been lacking for almost 30 years – a basketball rivalry, thanks to a 102-94 win by the Clippers. For a hoophead,
Tonight’s best game: LA Lakers at LA Clippers
The slumping Celtics have a revenge game at Indiana. The Knicks are visiting the Thunder in what could be a shootout. And Deron Williams is returning to Salt Lake City. All good games Saturday night in the NBA. And none nowhere near as good as the heavily hyped first meeting between the Lakers and Clippers. The locals call this the “Hallway Series” as both teams reside down the corridor from each other in the Staples Center. But this is not a rivalry,
Issues are mounting for slumping Celtics, Heat
// The Boston Celtics have some serious issues. Friday’s 88-79 home loss to Chicago was the third straight for the Celtics, who fell to 4-6. It is the first time in the “Big Three” era that they have been two games under .500. They are 19-18 since trading Kendrick Perkins. The Celtics simply cannot score, averaging 79.3 points during the slide. Paul Pierce is still looking for his rhythm after getting a late start to the season and is averaging 13.6 points
Tonight’s best game: Chicago at Boston
It’s time for the Boston Celtics to snap out of it. When the Celtics host the Chicago Bulls in the first game of ESPN’s Friday doubleheader, they will be trying to avoid a third straight home loss, something they have not done since the tail end of the 2009-10 season, when they were beaten by San Antonio, Oklahoma City and Houston. Optimists in Celtics Nation will point out that Gang Green managed to regroup that season and ended up within a stop
All-Star voting just began, and it’s already over
Technically, fan balloting for the All-Star Game ends Jan. 31, and TNT plans to announce the starters on Feb. 2. In reality, fan balloting already is over, and the starters already have been announced. While Twitter was all atwitter Thursday, with everybody and their fathers sending snippets of the first returns released by the NBA, we didn’t see anyone point out the yawning margins between the potential starters and also-rans. To unseat the current leaders at each position, it would take a “vote
Howard sets FT record; Horford, Melo hurt
// Thursday was a painful day in the NBA. Painful for the fans, who had slim pickings from the five-game slate of snoozers and blowouts. Painful for a handful of teams who lost key players to injury. And painful for the purists, who watched Dwight Howard historically distort the sport. Repeatedly sent to the line through intentional fouling, Howard broke Wilt Chamberlain’s 50-year-old record for free throws in a game, attempting 39 and sinking 21 as the Orlando Magic edged the Golden
