After trouncing the Los Angeles Lakers in Kobe Bryant’s return, the San Antonio Spurs are in the driver’s seat for the top seed in the West. They have four games left, and they only need to win three to be the West’s No. 1 seed for the second consecutive season. If they win all four, they could finish with the best record in the entire NBA. As for the Lakers, they may need to win out in their final two games against
Union calls for Fisher to resign as president
There is a civil war at the NBA Players’ Association, with the union’s executive committee rallying behind executive director Billy Hunter and asking for the resignation of president Derek Fisher. “The NBPA issued this statement this afternoon: “On Wednesday, April 18th, the NBPA Executive Committee cast an 8-to-0 vote that it lost confidence in Derek Fisher’s ability to act as Union President and requested Derek’s resignation. “The Executive Committee based its decision on numerous instances over the past six months where Fisher
Gus Forrest subs for “The Picker”
Got an e-mail from “The Picker” this morning. He is bummed. “I’m speechless, guess it’s time to take a day off or two and regroup. Cannot catch a break right now. This is as bad as its ever been for me. Its almost hysterical the way games are ending and such that I’m picking right now.” He went 0-2 last night, dropping his record to 18-17-2. Guess he gets the night off. But … We can’t leave y’all hanging, so I turned to the guy who
Celtics waive Jermaine O’Neal; sign Sean Williams
Desperate for a big man, the Boston Celtics waived Jermaine O’Neal today and reached into the D-League to sign journeyman Sean Williams, who played earlier this season for the Dallas Mavericks. Williams, a 6’10″ center/forward, appeared in eight games for the Dallas Mavericks this season averaging 3.6 points and 1.6 rebounds per game. O’Neal had season-ending wrist surgery late last month. Williams, who spent three seasons at Boston College, appeared in 27 games for the Texas Legends of the NBA Development League, averaging 15.2
Extra fantasy hoops contest tonight: Try to beat Sheridan
Another freeroll Friday has arrived, there are only six NBA games on the slate, and there will be no more regular season Fridays until next fall (the regular season ends Thursday, and the playoffs begin a week from tomorrow). We’ve been running freeroll fantasy contests with DraftStreet.com throughout the season, and many of you have been repeat players — and many of you may have become frustrated by the fact that there are often 600-800 players in the weekly freeroll, making
Dwight Howard to have surgery, out for the season
We may have seen Dwight Howard in an Orlando Magic uniform for the final time. Howard needs to undergo back surgery for a herniated disk, it was announced early today, and will miss the remainder of the NBA season. “It hurts (emotionally),” Howard told ESPN’s Chris Broussard. “That’s the first thing — it hurts. And then with people saying and thinking I’m quitting on my team. This is a real issue. I tried to play through it and it just made my
“The Picker” picks 2 tonight
The Picker went 2-2 last night, which is about what you’d expect from a buy with a batting average hovering just above .500. Tonight, he likes the Rockets giving five points against the Hornets, and the Clippers getting two points from the Suns. Sorry for the brief post, but filing from a strange computer this evening. More tomorrow from our man in Minnesota.
From whom would playoff berth be most satisfying? I say Utah
// csprtContainer(); // ]]> Out of the four teams currently fighting for the eighth spot in the Western Conference, who would be most gratified to earn that berth? The Houston Rockets? In their post-Yao era, they tried to trade half their team before the season started to rebuild around Pau Gasol. That didn’t happen after the original Chris Paul trade was vetoed, and the two players who would probably be most gratified are Luis Scola and Goran Dragic, who were a part of
