The three best records in the NBA belong to the Warriors, Grizzlies and Blazers. What do all three Western Conference teams have in common? Continuity. Besides for some minor tweaks, (Shaun Livingston, Vince Carter, Steve Blake and Chris Kaman) Golden State, Memphis and Portland retained their core players and have been extremely successful over the first quarter of the regular season. For Portland, now at 16-4 after Sunday’s win over New York, this is the third season the LaMarcus Aldridge-Damian Lillard-Nicolas Batum-Wes
Jarrett Jack: Getting Schooled in a Good Way
Jarrett Jack is 31 years old and is in his first season with the Brooklyn Nets, his seventh team in 10 years. Most players would feel lucky playing for half as many seasons, but very few think about what they’re going to do with their lives once their NBA career is over. Jack’s parents made sure their son thought about his post-playing career right after he decided to leave Georgia Tech following his junior season to enter the NBA draft. “It’s something I
Jimmy Butler emerges as NBA’s most improved player
Not a single SheridanHoops staff member picked Chicago Bulls guard Jimmy Butler to win this year’s Most Improved Player award, but nearly a quarter of the way through this season, Butler would appear the runaway winner. The Marquette product scored at least 20 points in a game just five times a season ago, but has reached that number eight times in his last nine games including a 26-point, five assist performance in Sunday’s win over Brooklyn. Butler says his confidence and
Sprung: Winless Sixers Look for Silver Lining Amid the Losing
It must be hard to stay positive after your team loses its first 14 games, and counting, regardless of the team’s desires or intentions for the season. The Philadelphia 76ers have lost all these games by an average of 16 points thus far. A 91-83 loss to New York on Saturday at Madison Square Garden was just the fourth time this season that they didn’t lose by double digits. They fell 114-104 on Monday night at home to Portland, but their coach remains abnormally upbeat. “Nobody
Bosh still adapting to replacing LeBron James’ leadership role
“It’s a lot to take in but that’s what I asked for,” said Miami Heat forward Chris Bosh on a rainy Monday night in Brooklyn. Bosh is still trying to take in the many responsibilities he accepted and undertook when he returned to Miami in July after LeBron James’ departure to Cleveland. Bosh took on Miami’s leading role after four years of being a supporting player. Bosh is now the team’s vocal leader and its top scorer, creator and facilitator. Shots
Denver Nuggets struggling without star power
Of the eight teams that reached the Western Conference playoffs last season, six of them had at least one player among the NBA’s top-20 in win shares. The two playoff teams that did not have a player among the top 20 were Memphis, with stars Marc Gasol, Mike Conley and Zach Randolph, and San Antonio, who boasts the famed star quartet of Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili and Kawhi Leonard. Five problems plaguing the New York Knicks
The New York Knicks have lost five straight games and are now 2-6 after wins over Cleveland and Charlotte in their first three contests. So what are the Knicks doing so poorly over the league’s first two-plus weeks? The offense is disastrously slow and inefficient The Knicks’ 88.7 Pace, or approximate possessions per game, is the worst in the league. New York has consistently gone late into the shot clock as they learn the Triangle offense, looking for the perfect pass or
J.R. Smith suspended one game for striking Glen Rice Jr. in the groin
Add this to the list of J.R. Smith suspensions. The New York Knicks guard was suspended one game by the league for “striking” the groin of Washington Wizards reserve forward Glen Rice Jr. on Tuesday night. He will miss Wednesday night’s game against Detroit. Rice Jr. was actually called for the foul on the play, but the Wizards ended up winning the game 98-83. The league may have deemed Smith’s transgression an intentional one based on his notorious track record Smith was suspended
