Younger NBA fans have been spoiled by Game 7s. Tonight’s showdown in Miami between the Heat and Spurs is the third Game 7 in the NBA Finals in the last nine years. Prior to that, there had been just one in the previous 16 years. Game 7’s are like tax returns, pizza and sex; they’re never really bad. The deadline to withdraw for the NBA draft has now passed. The biggest name to exit was Dario Saric, the Croatian forward who was rumored to be a possible lottery pick. Aside from a few names pulling out, the draft is now set. According to sources, the Cleveland Cavaliers – if the draft were held today – would select Alex Len with the top pick. The original Spurs championship team was based heavily on the frontcourt duo of David Robinson and Tim Duncan. Times have changed for San Antonio. While Duncan and Kawhi Leonard are integral parts of the Spurs’ team, of course, the team’s fortunes and outcomes in this year’s NBA Finals have been largely dictated by its backcourt. Boston Celtics coach Doc Rivers is one of the most accessible, accommodating individuals in the NBA. Lately, however, he’s been a charter member of the James Dolan Communication Society. Rivers has gone into radio silence while reports swirl around a potential trade to send him to the Los Angeles Clippers in what would be a bizarre deal, even by Clippers’ standards. The deal apparently has died – no surprise there, given what the Clippers would have to give up – but lost
