NEW YORK — Busy morning in Stu Jackson’s office, with another suspension announced in addition to the one given to Lakers coach Mike Brown. Kevin Love of the Minnesota Timberwolves won’t have a double-double Tuesday night or Wednesday night when the Wolves play a back-to-back set against Sacramento and Memphis. The Timberwolves forward was hit with a two-game suspension Monday by NBA vice president Stu Jackson “for driving his foot into the upper body and face of the Houston Rockets’ Luis Scola
Lakers coach Mike Brown suspended for one game
NEW YORK — I alluded to this in yesterday’s power rankings: Coaches need to set examples, and coaches need to impart upon their players that the worst time to get a technical foul is in the fourth quarter. Mike Brown picked up two of them in rapid succession Saturday night in the fourth quarter of the Lakers-Jazz game, and today he is paying the price. NBA vie president of violence Stu Jackson announced that Brown has been suspended one game without pay and fined
Amar’e’s brother killed in car crash
Amar’e Stoudemire’s older brother was killed in a car crash in Florida early Monday morning. TMZ.com reported that Hazell Stoudemire, 35, died on the scene in Lake Wales after crashing into the rear end of a tractor trailer. Amar’e Stoudemire, the star forward of the New York Knicks, is not expected to play Monday night when the Knicks host the Utah Jazz. Hazell Stoudemire is Amar’e Stoudemire’s full brother. The NBA star also has a younger half-brother, Marwan Williams, whom he watched over
Hubbard: Not sold on Oklahoma City
Although the Oklahoma City Thunder deserve the gushing praise that has been dispensed on their behalf, it would seem slightly premature to begin measuring for ring sizes. The Thunder are young and exciting. They have the youngest scoring champion in NBA history and he has a superstar guard as a sidekick. The third scorer has improved markedly from last season and unquestionably has star qualities. And none of those three – Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook and James Harden – has yet to
Consolation prize in New England: Celtics won
For the New England Patriots, that one long last Hail Mary attempt failed. For their sporting brethren in Boston who play basketball, another Hail Mary dropped through. Congratulations, Kevin Garnett. You now lead the NBA in 3-point field goal percentage for players with a minimum of three attempts, with a conversion percentage of 1.000. Garnett was 9-of-12 from the field, including his third 3-pointer of the season on three tries, as the Celtics defeated the Memphis Grizzlies 98-80 Sunday on a light day
Today’s best game: Memphis at Boston
Although the Celtics might not be the team everyone in Boston will be focusing on Sunday, for the hardcore NBA fan, they will be when they host the Memphis Grizzlies in what should be a tight match. If you’re in the mood for a beat down, the Toronto Raptors are heading to get slaughtered by the Miami Heat as well. Rajon Rondo, second in the league in assists (9.2), returned to Boston’s lineup Friday after missing eight games with a sprained wrist
Sheridan’s Sunday Power rankings
It is Super Bowl Sunday, and there are only two NBA games on the slate. But the key word in that sentence is Sunday, which used to be a day — almost a decade ago — when NBA fans could peruse the Internet and read five or six amazing NBA notes columns by some of the finest writers in the newspaper industry. Problem is, the newspaper industry got rid of most of their best writers and decided that Sunday notes columns were
Bernucca: Rebirth of the Sunday morning NBA column
Several of the dinosaur staffers here at SheridanHoops remember when Sunday mornings used to be spent reading NBA columns. Some of us are old enough to recall reading them in newspapers – Dan Shaughnessy in the Boston Globe, David Moore in the Dallas Morning News, Dave D’Alessandro in the Newark Star-Ledger and – of course – Mark Heisler in the Los Angeles Times. Nowadays, it’s hard to find a Sunday NBA column. Newspapers have gone hyperlocal, with more copy on high schools
