Austin wins D-League championship over Los Angeles
LOS ANGELES – D-League MVP Justin Dentmon scored a team-high 30 points to lead the Austin Toros to their first-ever NBA Development League Championship with a 122-110 victory over the Los Angeles D-Fenders on Saturday night at the Toyota Sports Center in L.A. Meet D.J. Kennedy, NBA player. The Cleveland Cavaliers today signed the former St. John’s guard from the Erie Bayhawks, making him the 58th player called up from the D-League this season. Kennedy will be in uniform Sunday when the Cavaliers play the San Antonio Spurs. He started all 44 games for the BayHawks, averaging 15.7 points, 7.3 rebounds, 4.4 assists and 1.6 steals in 37.4 minutes, with eight double-doubles. The D-League had a record 50 players called up to the NBA this season, the league announced Tuesday. The D-League also set a record with 64 NBA player assignments. The records are pleasant news for the D-League but not surprising given the abbreviated NBA training camps and the proliferation of injuries in this truncated 66-game season. Remember when we suggested that the Los Angeles Lakers re-sign Gerald Green? Well, the New Jersey Nets beat them to it. Green, a former Slam Dunk Contest winner who was named MVP of the D-League All-Star Game over the weekend, signed with the Nets on Monday, the minor league announced.
