It was just a couple months ago that the “Save Vinny’s Job” homestand began for the Los Angeles Clippers. They returned home reeling from a seven-point road loss against New Orleans, the worst team in the West, and had lost eight of 12. What has happened since has been the second renaissance of the former laughingstocks of Los Angeles, and Del Negro coached his kiester off in Game 7 of the first round against the Memphis Grizzlies, riding the players
The Bernucca List – Edition 24
Last week’s edition of The Bernucca List had been posted for less than an hour before reader Randy – who isn’t necessarily a randy reader – provided the correct answer. Randy’s response was “Players who wear 0 and whose teams made the playoffs this year.” Nice job. This week, we have a list of coaches rather than players. However, our postseason theme continues. If you think you know the common threads among these men, send me a Tweet or post
Playoffs Day 10: Spurs sweep Jazz, Clippers win in OT
We shall begin this morning by saying goodbye to the San Antonio Spurs … for a little while. They will play again, they will most certainly be rested, and they still will have no black marks on their record since back on April 11 when they lost to the Lakers. Since then, it’s been 14 wins in a row — the latest an 87-81 victory at Utah the eliminated the Jazz after they fought tooth and nail over the final month
Bernucca: Even in playoffs, Spurs’ Popovich still resting his stars
San Antonio Spurs coach Gregg Popovich made it a habit to rest his veteran stars this season, come what may. Up until Game 3, the Coach of the Year had been treating the playoffs much the same way. Tim Duncan played 35 minutes in San Antonio’s 102-90 Game 3 victory Saturday night, and Tony Parker played 40. But during the first two games against the Utah Jazz, the only Spur to play more than 31 minutes was Parker, who logged 37
Playoffs Day 5: Grizzlies get even; Spurs, Pacers romp
The Memphis Grizzlies are one of the less glamorous teams in the postseason party. They shoot 3-pointers about as poorly as any team in the NBA. They don’t have many high flyers offering up highlight-reel dunks a la Blake Griffin. They have not one but two ground-bound post players in Marc Gasol and Zach Randolph. The Grizzlies simply defend like mad, play through their big men and try to make hay in transition and at the free-throw line. And for the last
Playoffs Day 5: Previews of Jazz-Spurs, Pacers-Magic, Clippers-Grizzlies
The Coach of the Year was announced Tuesday, with Gregg Popovich coming out on top by a wide margin. It was certainly well-deserved, but there were plenty of other coaches that warranted attention as well. Thirteen coaches received votes, including Frank Vogel, Lionel Hollins, Tyrone Corbin, Stan Van Gundy and Vinny Del Negro – mid-season crisis and all. The work of these fine coaches will be on display tonight as we look into the preview of three playoff games on Wednesday night. Utah (0-1) at
News, Notes, and Rumors from around the NBA: May 1, 2012.
NEWS A league source said Tuesday afternoon that New York Knicks forward Amar’e Stoudemire is expected to miss the remainder of the Knicks’ first-round series with the Miami Heat after badly cutting his hand hitting a fire extinguisher case in a hallway of American Airlines Arena after Miami’s 104-94 Game 2 victory. The Denver Nuggets say forward Wilson Chandler is expected to be ready by the start of training camp next season after undergoing surgery to repair a labral tear in his
Gregg Popovich wins Coach of the Year
Gregg Popovich, who guided the San Antonio Spurs to the best record in the Western Conference, has been voted the NBA’s Coach of the Year, the league announced Tuesday. It is the second Red Auerbach trophy for Popovich, who also won in 2003. He received 77 first-place votes and 467 points from a 119-member media panel, easily outdistancing Tom Thibodeau of the Chicago Bulls, who won last year. Despite a compressed schedule shortened to 66 games by the lockout, the Spurs went
