Welcome to the real season. Now that the Super Bowl is over and the NFL finally fades into the background of the American sports scene, many casual sports fans turn their attention to the NBA, as if the only sport that existed from Mondays to Saturdays in January was Herm Edwards and Ron Jaworski yelling hyperbolic nonsense at each other. Football’s bloated specter can be overbearing at times, especially with The Worldwide Leader making Daily Mail stories out of day-to-day NFL occurrences.
Finally. After much anticipation, and to some chagrin, the NBA’s coaches have submitted their list of reserves for the forthcoming 2014 NBA All-Star game in New Orleans, LA. Many of the All-Star reserve selections are expected, though there were a few selections (and snubs) that were unconventional, though deserving. In Kobe Bryant’s fourth game back from an injured achilles, the Los Angeles Lakers played against the Charlotte Bobcats on the road in the Time Warner Arena and escaped with an 88-85 win—their first since his return. The win will, perhaps, allow Pau Gasol to continue their road trip with his pride intact. Friday morning (Pacific time), a gunman pulled a rifle from a bag and began shooting. The authorities pursued the assailant through Terminal 3 before shooting and capturing him. Among the victims, one person has been confirmed dead, some others injured. According to reports, the shooting has rendered LAX, among the busiest airports in the world, into a practical no fly zone. There has been a “ground stop” for all arriving flights, and nearly every flight scheduled to leave Los Angeles is expected
The day is here. The time is now. So it is, that we begin the 2013-14 NBA season. After a summer full of drama and change, the teams, players and fans are ready for the new season to start. Hall of Fame center Shaquille O’Neal was one of the funniest, leveraging dance maneuvers, random self-made nicknames, eccentric charisma and many silly antics to make fans laugh.
