The Cleveland Cavaliers (22-20) seem to finally be turning things around, having won three straight — two over the Clippers and Bulls — after a brutal stretch of 10 losses in 12 games. But they aren’t forgetting what got them in that hole. The Cavs are 1-8 this season without LeBron James, and injuries to both he and Kevin Love have exposed Cleveland’s roster for lacking depth. You hear a lot of things when you are connected to a bunch of heavy hitters, and I heard a couple of things last week that sent me in search of the truth. And whatever the truth is, it was not readily apparent. First I heard from a source close to the Bulls that Tom Thibodeau had lost his locker room, his football coach mentality wearing thin with key members of a roster who it is fair to say have underperformed.

While Knicks president Phil Jackson spent Monday night finalizing a three-team deal that he hopes will make Madison Square Garden relevant again, across the East River, Mavericks guard Rajon Rondo was helping Dallas beat Brooklyn with one of his patented double-doubles. You know, the one that doesn’t require points. Jackson has the woeful Knicks going all in on free agency, creating enough cap space to possibly lure two stars to the World’s Most Famous Arena. New Year’s Day brought the latest round of All-Star balloting returns, and it’s a safe bet that the five leading vote-getters in each conference will remain there. Stephen Curry and Kobe Bryant lead the West backcourt, with James Harden trailing Kobe by about 180,000 votes. In the West frontcourt, Anthony Davis is a shoo-in, with Blake Griffin and Marc Gasol second and third, and Tim Duncan trailing Gasol by 55,000 votes. In the East, John Wall and Dwyane Wade are No. 1
