Jerry Buss is playing a different brand of poker with the Lakers
The good news for LA: Andrew Bynum is back and playing out of his mind, recording the first 20-20 game of his career two nights ago against Houston. Now the bad: The Lakers are heading to the Rose Garden, where Kobe Bryant’s career record is 6-23. Tonight’s best game is in Portland, where the LA Lakers make their first, and only, visit of this season at 10:30 ET in the second game of a nice doubleheader on TNT. Preceding that matchup, Atlanta hosts

LOS ANGELES – Now about those exciting new Clippers … They’re definitely new with five starters who were on four different teams last season. They’re guaranteed to excite, too, with Blake Griffin, the game’s most spectacular player since Julius Erving, or ever, Chris Paul trying to see how high he can throw a lob Blake can jam, and everyone putting on a nightly highlight reel. Unfortunately for them, they’re still the Clippers, yet to distinguish themselves from The Band You’ve Known For All
For a six-game night, there are some nice matchups. The Nets are visiting the Magic, which means the New York metro area media will be zoning up Dwight Howard. LOS ANGELES — Imagine that, another Laker bubble gets popped before the wife and kids can pick up the wrapping paper from their Christmas gifts…. “Here’s a timeshare in Hawaii for you, and one in Cancun for you, and a Rolls-Royce for Mom…. “Dad has to run downtown but we’ll eat at, like, 6 p.m.? “No problem. // That calming breeze you feel outside is the collective sigh of relief coming from the West, originating in Los Angeles. Unless the wind is blowing from the Northeast, near Boston. Then it’s cold and bitter. The folks who sit in the front row and wear their sunglasses indoors had a little extra bounce in their step as they strode to the valet stand last night, a measure of normalcy having returned to the Staples Center as the Lakers — the first team
When you’ve won as many championships as the Lakers have (11 since moving to Los Angeles), your fans get spoiled. And what do spoiled people do? They whine when things don’t go their way. That’s not a knock on Lakers fans, it’s just the way I see it. I spoke about that particular fan dynamic tonight on the Sportsnet 590-The Fan radio in Toronto with host Roger Lajoie, and we also touched on the uptempo style the Miami Heat are playing, the surprising struggles
By this time Wednesday, the city of Los Angeles could be in a full-blown state of panic. Forget about earthquakes, brushfires or rolling blackouts, which are the customary causes for trouble in Tinseltown. No, it’s the Lakers, who will be trying to avoid an 0-3 start when they host the Utah Jazz. It’s the second game of TNT’s doubleheader, which means everything the Lakers say and do will be analyzed by their star-studded studio panel in a way that would shame Sheldon from
