David Stern is disingenuous. How’s that for one of those million-dollar words that the NBA commissioner loves to use when talking to the hoi polloi about basketball? In slapping the San Antonio Spurs with a $250,000 fine for resting their trio of stars in a nationally televised game, Stern said in his customary, quite lawyerly fashion, “The result here is dictated by the totality of the facts in this case.” [Read more…]
Spurs fined 250K by NBA
NEW YORK – The NBA announced today that the San Antonio Spurs organization has been fined $250,000 for its decision to send four players (Tim Duncan, Manu Ginobili, Tony Parker, Danny Green) home prior to the Spurs’ Nov. 29 game in Miami. The Spurs’ actions were in violation of a league policy, reviewed with the NBA Board of Governors in April 2010, against resting players in a manner contrary to the best interests of the NBA. NBA Commissioner David Stern stated: “The
Perkins: Only TNT is entitled to be mad at Popovich
MIAMI – Those weren’t the San Antonio Spurs that visited AmericanAirlines Arena and lost to the Miami Heat, 105-100, on Thursday. But that doesn’t give you reason to hate. We all know those weren’t the real Spurs, not the team that’s won four titles with its Big Three of forward Tim Duncan and guards Manu Ginobili and Tony Parker. They were all in San Antonio, chillin’, relaxin’. [Read more…]
Rosen: Popovich v. Stern: Who wears the dunce cap?
According to his job description, David Stern is supposed to be totally neutral and impartial. Except for possibly desiring a big-market rather than small-market team to advance to the NBA Finals, who wins and who loses shouldn’t be something that concerns the commissioner. However, I absolutely guarantee that Stern was passionately rooting for Miami to beat San Antonio in Thursday night’s already infamous M.I.A. game. [Read more…]
SH Blog: Popovich makes costly choice, Wade explains what he sacrificed, Bynum gets sued
Did Gregg Popovich screw the fans and the NBA by making the decision to sit out four of his starters for a nationally televised game on TNT, on a night where only two games were on the schedule? Because lets face it: no one is exactly clamoring to see the Heat take on a bunch of role players that casual fans know nothing about – the Spurs aren’t exactly the most popular team to watch to begin with. Hell, even the
Sanctions, shmanctions. Viva Popovich? Spurs nearly beat Heat
Should NBA commissioner David Stern have kept his mouth shut instead of popping off pregame against “Pop”? Or were the “substantial sanctions” he alluded to nothing more than a precursor to a public re-assessment of the relative strength of the Miami Heat? Where does this thing go next? [Read more…]

Billups Back; Rondo Ejected; Wizards Finally Win
It’s the same old Spurs. When Kawhi Leonard went down, then Stephen Jackson got hurt, I thought Danny Green would become a fantasy star for at least a couple of weeks. It hasn’t worked out that way. Instead, the veteran stars have stepped up their games. Tim Duncan outscored Nikola Vucevic 13-0 by halftime and Tony Parker (14 PTS, 8 AST) was needed for less than 30 minutes. Manu Ginobili was brilliant as the sixth man, hitting 6-of-9, all from 3-point
