BROOKLYN – You don’t need a watch to know the time for the Memphis Grizzlies to win a title is now. If you did, acquiring Jeff Green was the beeping alarm clock that woke up the rest of the Western Conference. With Green, Memphis has the missing piece to compete atop the vaunted West. [Read more…]
Bernucca: For West Teams, Trade Grades as Deadline Arrives Early
After last week’s loss in Atlanta, Memphis Grizzlies coach Dave Joerger – whose team has the fifth-best record in the NBA – lamented his roster’s shortcomings. “We have to get another playmaker on the floor,” Joerger said. “We’re going to have to start playing multiple point guards (at the same time). We’ve got to be able to get inside of defenses.” It doesn’t matter that the Grizzlies have been at or near the top of the league for most of the season.
SH Blog: LeBron Could Return Tuesday, Kevin Love Will Wait to Sign Long-Term
Cleveland Cavaliers forward LeBron James has missed the team’s past nine games, including their complete meltdown against the Sacramento Kings on Sunday evening that dropped them to 19-19 on the season. The final score was 103-84, but was surely over well before the final quarter. James has been sidelined with lingering knee and back issues, and was supposed to miss about two weeks with the ailments. Before the Cavs played the Kings on Sunday however, he was spotted at shoot around
Photo of the Day: Jeff Green Reflects on Heart Surgery
Boston Celtics forward Jeff Green posted a photo on Friday, celebrating his “second birthday”. I’m sure you’re wondering what he means by that, and that’s what I’m here to tell you. In December of 2011 after a routine physical, doctors discovered an aortic aneurysm. After discussing the options, Green and the Boston Celtics decided it best to have surgery on his heart and fix the condition completely. [Read more…]
Rookie Rankings, Week 9: Jusuf Nurkic, Winning
It’s hard to find an NBA player – let alone a rookie – who had a better week than Jusuf Nurkic. Last Saturday, the center from Bosnia and his Denver Nuggets teammates were lying in wait for the Memphis Grizzlies, who were coming off a tougher-than-expected road win over the Los Angeles Lakers the previous night and had to make one of the league’s tougher overnight trips. LA to Denver may not seem like much, but it is a long flight
Brumagin: Love Lost as LeBron Sits Out On 30th Birthday
ATLANTA — The Cavs may have to re-purpose an old Alfred Lord Tennyson quote: “‘Tis better to have [Kevin] Love and lost than to never have Love at all.” Not quite what Tennyson had in mind, but one might have asked such a question after the dismal performance the Cleveland power forward gave prior to leaving Tuesday’s marquee Eastern Conference matchup with the Atlanta Hawks. Love made only one of eight shots — a three-pointer — and hit four free throws for
SH Blog: Mavs Get Win in Rondo’s Debut, Cavs Handle Short-Handed Grizz
Rajon Rondo made his debut count with the Dallas Mavericks on Saturday night against the San Antonio Spurs. The Mavs new point guard scored six points on 3-of-11 shooting and dished out nine assists, adding seven rebounds in a 99-93 victory. It seems like a typical Rondo night. He didn’t score until the third quarter, was well below 40% from the floor, but made all the plays we’ve seen him make in Boston the past eight plus years. [Read more…]
SH Blog: Kobe Passes Michael Jordan on All-Time Scoring List, Warriors Keep Rolling
On Sunday night, Kobe Bryant passed Michael Jordan for third all-time on the NBA scoring list. On Friday night in a 112-110 overtime victory over the Spurs, Kobe scored 22 points, leaving him eight short of tying MJ and nine short of leaping him in the record books. He finished Sunday’s game with 26 points and a 100-94 win over the young Minnesota Timberwolves, passing Jordan with an exclamation point. In a season surrounded by uncertainty for the Lakers and Kobe’s future,
