With the NBA season slowly but surely winding down, we’re starting to get a clearer understanding of who’s going to be in the playoffs, who’s going to be out and who’s going to fight until the very end. Boston Celtics and Milwaukee Bucks are seeds No. 7 and 8 respectively in the Eastern Conference, and both are in a dog fight – whether they want to admit it or not – to avoid facing the Miami Heat in the first round.
With only seven games on the NBA schedule Monday night, the focus was on the Miami Heat and its pursuit of a franchise record 15th consecutive win in Minnesota. On Sunday, the New York Knicks appeared on their way to a third and telling victory over the Miami Heat this season. The Knicks had a 14-point halftime lead. The Heat’s 13-game winning streak was in serious jeopardy. And a third loss to New York would have more than a few folks wondering if Miami could get out of the Eastern Conference and repeat as NBA champions. But the Heat turned things around in the second half and rallied for a 99-93
The Milwaukee Bucks are 3-1 since J.J. Redick was acquired in a trade with the Orlando Magic, the latest victory coming in overtime Saturday night against the Toronto Raptors, 122-114. Redick scored 16 points in 35 minutes off the bench, and the Bucks moved within 1 1/2 games of the Boston Celtics for the coveted No. 7 spot in the East. (They have already clinched the season series against the Celtics.)
When February turns into March, the hope for all NBA coaches is that their teams will be fresh and up to the challenge of competing for respect around the league (relatively speaking for each team, of course). Sometimes things just happen that the neither the coaches nor the players can expect or account for.
