In a highly contested matchup between the Portland Trail Blazers and the Minnesota Timberwolves, the Trail Blazers prevailed to win their 33rd game of the season. Though 33 wins in an 82 game season isn’t exactly a major feat, it does tell of how far this team has come in one season. There are still 38 games left in the season, and Portland has managed to tie their total amount of wins from last year in half that time. [Read more…]
Bernucca: Grading the Trades That Have Already Been Made
Since training camp opened, there have been five significant trades involving 10 teams, 19 players and seven draft picks. The big winners have been a team that got rid of the highest scorer among the traded players and a team that acquired a player who has yet to play. The big loser has been a team that swears by analytics. Another way to look at it is like this: The biggest trades thus far have been the ones that haven’t been made
Gambling on the Western Conference: A Free-For-All
Advertisement The Western Conference is absolutely nothing like the Eastern Conference when it comes to championship odds. We have what I call a two-horse race in the East versus what I am going to call the six-plus team race in the West. In the 15 previous seasons, only four teams (the Lakers, seven times; the Spurs, five times, the Mavericks, two times; the Thunder, once) have won the Western Conference, which is a similar concept to what the Eastern
NBA Admits Refs Missed Foul Call in Mavs-Wolves Game
NBA referees have had better weeks. On Thursday, the league admitted that Blake Griffin should not have been given a technical foul – his second of the game, resulting in an ejection – in the Christmas matchup between the Los Angeles Clippers and Golden State Warriors. On Tuesday, the league announced that Dallas forward Shawn Marion should have been called for a foul on his “blocked shot” on Minnesota’s Kevin Love at the end of Monday’s 100-98 win by the Mavericks. Tweet of the Day: NBA Christmas Tree Showdown
Not to mislead, there is not a tree competition among NBA players. However, in light of the Christmas season—today being Christmas Eve—a few players, namely Boston Celtics rookie Kelly Olynyk, New Orleans Pelicans guard Jrue Holiday and Minnesota Timberwolves forward Kevin Love, took to Instagram and Twitter to post pictures of their families trees to help spread Holiday cheer. Warner: Can Kevin Love pull a Wilt Chamberlain?
I know it’s early, but Minnesota’s Kevin Love has an outside chance to do something that’s only been accomplished by three players in NBA history: Lead the league in scoring and rebounding in the same season. Love leads the NBA in rebounding with 13.9 per game and is third in scoring with a 25.9 average. He trails scoring leader Kevin Durant by 2.2 points a game, a substantial margin but one that’s not impossible to overcome with more than two-thirds of
Tweet of the Day: Derrick Williams Thanks Timberwolves, Fans On Way Out
Not even a quarter of the way into the season, the Minnesota Timberwolves are making moves. In an effort to find a better fit for Rick Adelman’s rotation, the Wolves have shipped forward Derrick Williams to the Sacramento Kings in exchange for defensive specialist Luc Mbah a Moute. It could be said that Williams was being underutilized in Minnesota. Over the last 10 games, Williams made seven appearances, averaging 3.6 points and two rebounds in just over 10 minutes per game. On his
Rookie Rankings, Week 3: Trey Burke, Shane Larkin make strong debuts
Last week, we discussed how the race for Rookie of the Year is wide open because of injuries to several of the top picks. No. 3 Otto Porter, No. 6 Nerlens Noel and No. 10 C.J. McCollum still haven’t taken the court this season. But a couple of first-round picks – both point guards – made their NBA debuts this week. On Monday, it was Dallas Mavericks guard Shane Larkin, who suffered a broken ankle in the last practice before summer league.
