Jerry Buss to Phil Jackson: Enjoy your retirement, big guy. The Lakers say Jerry Buss, Jim Buss and GM Mitch Kupchak decided the triangle wouldn’t be as good as pick-and-rolls and picked the droll guy with the West Virginia accent who’s relatively conventional but has 11 fewer titles than the Zen Master of Disaster. Fat bleeping chance. Here’s what we know for sure: As the Lakers-Kings game ended Sunday night, Mitch Kupchak called D’Antoni’s agent, Warren Legarie, at home. “Let’s do a deal,” said
James, Faried named Players of the Week
Forwards LeBron James of the Miami Heat and Kenneth Faried of the Denver Nuggets were named NBA Players of the Week on Monday. It was the all-time record 38th Player of the Week award for James, who won for the Eastern Conference. He led the Heat to a 3-1 mark, posting double-doubles in points and rebounds in all four games. He averaged 21.0 points, 11.0 boards and 6.0 assists while shooting 57 percent from the field. It was the first Player of
Hubbard: Of Cowboys, Lakers and Jerry Buss
When the NBA lockout was announced in the summer of 2011, I was driving the streets of Dallas and checking out the three sports radio stations in the area. I listened briefly to each one to get their take on the major news of the day and then called my basketball cohort Mike Monroe in San Antonio. “Guess what the three sports radio stations are discussing?” I said. “Not the lockout?” wondered Monroe. “Hardly.” “Well then what?” “Two of the three are in animated discussions
What if Thomas Robinson was named Metta World Peace?
When the NBA is doling out suspensions for flagrant fouls and fights, Commissioner David Stern has said that a player’s previous track record factors into determining the penalty. For example, during a nationally televised regular-season game last season, Los Angeles Lakers forward Metta World Peace received a seven-game suspension for elbowing James Harden in the head, flooring the Oklahoma City Thunder guard and leaving him with a concussion. World Peace was clearly caught up in the emotion of the moment – which
The Bernucca List – Edition 30
Really? Thirty of these already? We started these about a year ago for two reasons. One was both editor-in-chief Chris Sheridan and yours truly both were big fans of The Spy List, which ran in Spy, a wonderfully snarky monthly magazine in the late 1980s and early 1990s. (It also did its fair share of good investigative reporting, by the way.) The other reason we began running these was NBA commissioner David Stern and union chief Billy Hunter were remarkably unsympathetic to
Lakers guard Steve Blake fined $25,000
Los Angeles Lakers guard Steve Blake was fined $25,000 by the NBA on Tuesday for inappropriate language toward a fan. The fine was announced by NBA executive vice president of basketball operations Stu Jackson. With 29 seconds remaining in Friday’s 105-95 loss to the rival Clippers at Staples Center, Blake apparently had a nasty exchange with a fan. Blake has been pressed into a starting role following the injury to point guard Steve Nash. He is averaging 5.3 points, 4.3 assists and 2.0
Harden, Jennings are NBA Players of the Week
Last week, James Harden did get a contract extension and Brandon Jennings didn’t. This week, both received NBA Player of the Week honors. Harden, who received a maximum five-year, $80 million extension from the Houston Rockets after being traded by the Oklahoma City Thunder, won for the Western Conference. Called a “foundational player” upon his arrival in Houston, Harden began living up to that billing by averaging 35.3 points and leading the Rockets to a 2-1 mark. Harden had 37 points and
The Bernucca List – Edition 29
The return of NBA games that count also brought the return of The Bernucca List, which made its 2012-13 debut last week. It took just under three hours before reader Brian delivered the correct answer, which was “Players who were waived after being acquired in trades this offseason.” Five of the players on the list were waived by Houston Rockets GM Daryl Morey, who added to the list following the James Harden trade by waiving five more players – Jon Brockman, Gary
