It is very rare to see the Miami Heat lose. It is even more rare to hear Rich DeVos speak. Both happened last night in Orlando, where the Dwight Howard trade situation again took center stage in what has been a circus of a season for the Magic. In a nutshell, DeVos doesn’t want to trade Howard, and the Orlando owner revealed that he has told Howard the grass is not always greener on the other side — although he did not rule
Magic owner Rich DeVos on Dwight Howard: “I don’t want to trade him”
I have been saying this over and over again when asked on radio shows and in video appearances what I expect to happen with Dwight Howard and the Orlando Magic. Time and again, I have come back to one key point: The fate of Howard, for this season anyway, rests in the hands of 85-year-old owner Magic owner Rich DeVos. I am not 85, but I would imagine that when you are 85, you know the clock is ticking. You are not interested
Saturday night’s all right for fightin’
Guys were losing their cool all over the league Saturday night. Coaches, players, winners, losers – it didn’t matter. Things got out of control in Utah, Minnesota and Indiana, and fines and suspensions should be coming. Let’s start in Salt Lake City, where Lakers coach Mike Brown totally lost it in the fourth quarter of a 96-87 loss to the Jazz. LA trailed, 72-68, and Pau Gasol had possession at the top of the circle. Utah guard Earl Watson came from his blind
Orlando signs Ish Smith, recently waived by Golden State
ORLANDO — With Jameer Nelson sidelined by a concussion until next Monday at the earliest, the Orlando Magic reached into the D-League today and signed guard Ish Smith. Smith appeared in six games earlier this season for the Golden State Warriors, averaging 4.5 points, 1.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists in 10.5 minutes. He scored a season-high 11 points in a 92-78 win over the New York Knicks on Dec. 28 before being waived by the Warriors on Jan. 13. He joined
Mitnick: Update from Israel on Fran Vazquez (Magic) and Erazem Lorbek (Spurs)
TEL AVIV, Israel — Regal Barcelona put on a defensive clinic in Tel-Aviv against Maccabi in a round of 16 showdown between two of the powerhouse teams in the Euroleague. Barcelona’s stable of big men and heady guard play were too much for Maccabi to overcome, giving the Spanish squad a big 71-57 road victory. Barcelona’s frontcourt features two NBA prospects in Erazem Lorbek and Fran Vasquez, whose combination of size and skill was too much for Maccabi. With Sofoklis Schortsanitis
Magic disappear again; Wade returns
// After the Orlando Magic’s shameful performance Thursday night vs. Boston, in which they blew a 27-point lead, scored 25 points in the second half and lost to a severely shorthanded team, Jason Richardson said the team was developing a soft reputation. After Friday night’s debacle in New Orleans, coach Stan Van Gundy said it all. From Josh Robbins of the Orlando Sentinel: “If this isn’t rock bottom, what is? The Orlando Magic completed a forgettable week Friday night, falling to the
A Magical Collapse, and Throwback Failure
// There’s just no other way to say it. It was as if the Boston Celtics were all wearing four-leaf clovers on their jerseys, instead of three. Or maybe the Celtics found Orlando’s kryptonite in…in E’Twaun Moore? The rookie from Perdue scored 16 points and hit all four of his 3-pointers as the Magic stumbled, shouted at the refs, and folded — losing all of a 27-point deficit in a stunning 91-83 loss to Boston. When 3:11 remained in the second quarter,
Tonight’s best game: Boston at Orlando
The Orlando Magic host the Boston Celtics in the NBA’s best game Thursday night, three days after they were embarrassed in Beantown. And no one should be more embarrassed than Jameer Nelson. Nelson has gotten off to an awful start this season. He appeared to turn a corner last week with a pair of 17-point games, but that turn only took him down a dark alley. In Monday’s 87-56 loss, Nelson “piloted” the Magic’s offense to the lowest total in franchise history.
