Saturday night’s all right for fightin’
Guys were losing their cool all over the league Saturday night. Coaches, players, winners, losers – it didn’t matter. Things got out of control in Utah, Minnesota and Indiana, and fines and suspensions should be coming. Let’s start in Salt Lake City, where Lakers coach Mike Brown totally lost it in the fourth quarter of a 96-87 loss to the Jazz. LA trailed, 72-68, and Pau Gasol had possession at the top of the circle. Utah guard Earl Watson came from his blind
Utah’s Derrick Favors fined $25,000 by NBA
On Jan. 31, Derrick Favors will have an extra deduction from his paycheck. Late in the third quarter of Thursday’s loss to Dallas, the forward of the Utah Jazz threw a ball into the stands in disagreement with an offensive foul call. His immediate punishment was ejection from referee Matt Boland. On Saturday, the NBA decided Favors needed further discipline and fined him $25,000. The fine came from NBA VP of Violence Stu Jackson, who has been remarkably inactive this season. Gotta love
Tonight’s best game: LA Clippers at Utah
On March 20, 2003, the United States invaded Iraq. On Dec. 18, 2011, the last American troops withdrew. And during that entire time, the Los Angeles Clippers never won a game in Utah. The last time the Clippers won in Salt Lake City was Jan. 2003. They will be riding a 16-game road losing streak to the Jazz when they visit Wednesday night. LA doesn’t do too well vs. Utah at home, either. The Clippers have lost 10 of the last 11 meetings
Utah wins at Denver, joins two-thirds club
Prior to last night, nine of the 30 NBA teams had won at least two-thirds of their games. Now, there are 10. Welcome to the club, Paul Millsap and the Utah Jazz. When you think of players who can reel off 14 consecutive fourth-quarter points for their team in the hick of a tight contest, certain names come to mind: Kobe, D-Wade, LeBron, Kevin Durant, Derrick Rose, Dirk Nowitzki. It is what they do and what they’ve done, which is why all of them
Tonight’s best game: Utah at Denver
After consecutive 11-game nights and before another 11-game slate on the league’s unofficial holiday of Martin Luther King Day, the NBA adopts its customary strategy on Sundays in January of refusing to schedule heavily against the NFL. That leaves a just three-game board, with the Utah Jazz visiting the Denver Nuggets likely the best game. Hey, it can’t be Lakers-Clippers every night. And that Broncos-Patriots game was a real thriller, huh? This is Utah’s second visit to the Mile High City. Their
When Van Gundy’s Honda Civic got jet-blasted; plus other tales from the past and present
Did you ever hear the story about the time Jeff Van Gundy’s Honda Civic got flipped onto Brendan Malone’s brand-new Mercedes by a jet blast from the Knicks’ charter plane? Do you remember the 1996 Western Conference finals when Karl Malone was taking so long to shoot free throws, the fans in Seattle counted to 10 while he prepared to shoot? The Jazz lost that series in Game 7 at Key Arena when Malone missed two big shots from the line at
Tonight’s best game: Utah at LA Lakers
By this time Wednesday, the city of Los Angeles could be in a full-blown state of panic. Forget about earthquakes, brushfires or rolling blackouts, which are the customary causes for trouble in Tinseltown. No, it’s the Lakers, who will be trying to avoid an 0-3 start when they host the Utah Jazz. It’s the second game of TNT’s doubleheader, which means everything the Lakers say and do will be analyzed by their star-studded studio panel in a way that would shame Sheldon from
