Eurobasket: France tanks its final first-round game vs. Spain

VILNIUS, Lithuania — The best defense played by France came from its coach, Vincent Collet, when he had to explain his decision to bench Tony Parker and Joakim Noah in a 96-69 loss to Spain on Sunday that dropped Les Blues into second-place in Group E.

And Collet was indeed on the defensive after Spanish coach Sergio Scariolo opened his post-game remarks by saying Spain had too much respect for the game — and for the other teams still fighting to stay alive in EuroBasket — to give a less-than-full effort in the final game of the second round for each team.

“It was kind of a weird game in a certain way,” said Scariolo, whose team went on a 27-4 run to start the second half to turn what was a one-point game at halftime into a blowout.  “But we wanted to respect the teams that are playing for the final positions, and for us there is nothing better than another good game to keep improving. Now we go to the do-or-die part of the competition with everyone healthy. Better to get there in a good way than a bad way.”

Collet said be benched Parker in order to rest him after the point guard averaged more than 33 minutes per game in France’s first seven games — all victories.

Regarding Noah, Collet said he sat him under orders from the team doctor because Noah had swelling in his knee.

“We know what is our goal, our goal is to go to the Olympics,” said Collet, who grew increasingly testy during the post-game news conference.

Scariolo divvied up the playing time in a game with little meaning in the big picture, which is to finish first or second to earn an Olympic berth or finish third, fourth or fifth to earn a spot in the second-chance Olympic qualifier next July. Juan Carlos Navarro shot 6-for-7 overall and 4-for-4 from 3-point range and had 16 points in 15 minutes, Rudy Fernandez shot 6-for-8, including 3-for-4 from downtown, and scored 15, Pau Gasol had 11 points in 18 minutes and Serge Ibaka scored 10 points with seven rebounds in a team-high 24 minutes. (Ricky Rubio played only 9 minutes and did not score, shooting 0-for-3 to make him 5-for-24 for the tournament, including 0-for-11 on 3-pointers).

The loss was the first of the summer for France after 14 consecutive victories, including exhibitions. They will likely play Greece in the quarterfinals.

Spain moves on to the quarterfinals to play the winner of Monday’s game between Finland and Slovenia, which will determine fourth place in Group F.

“Every team has its own situation, every team has a different situation,” Scariolo said as Fernandez sat alongside him with a bemused expression on his face. “They had a great tournament so far, they were the best team in the tournament thus far, and I think they honored the European championship with their performance so far, so nothing else. Everybody speaks for his own situation.”
